Scientific Knowledge Objects (SKO)
Scientific Knowledge Objects(or SKOs) are the main unit that will be used to represent artifacts (e.g. documents, images, datasets) in the context of the LiquidPub project.
The main features projected for SKOs include composability, reusability, evolvability and facilitation of collaborative work. To achieve this, the SKO separates the actual data file representing the document, its semantics and its presentation into different levels or layers, while also proposing an evolution model based based both on the traditional version control (branches, forks, versions, etc) and on the introduction of states(e.g. liquid, solid, etc.).
Documents
Current development Areas on the SKO are focused on the evolution of the conceptual model, to cover different components and defining relations between them. On the macro level, work on SKOs is currently centered on their evolution (versioning, branching, snapshots and states) and on how to enable their search and navigation.
SKO structure, evolution, and navigation models (final version)
F. Giunchiglia, R. ChenuAbente, D. Mirylenka, H. Xu
This deliverable represents the final version of the SKO specification within the LiquidPub project, specifically tailored for the needs of the LiquidPub applications. and it discusses the use and features enabled by it within these applications.
Supporting Scientific Inclusion
R ChenuAbente, J.J. Jara, F. Giunchiglia, F. Casati, M. Marchese
Paper presented at CLEI2010 that explores the possible impact of a the SKO-enabled LiquidPub applications in the context of the science creation and access in developing countries.
Scientific Knowledge Objects v.1
F. Giunchiglia, R. ChenuAbente.
This document introduces the SKO and its associated structures as a response to the needs of a collaborative platform for the creation, dissemination and publication of Complex Artifacts and also as an option to the current paper centered scientific publication practices. The approach presented is based on three Organization levels (Data, Knowledge and Collection) and also three States (Gas, Liquid, Solid) that regulate the properties and operations allowed at each level.
Scientific Knowledge Objects Appendix v.1
F. Giunchiglia, R. Chenu.
This document is a complement to the Scientific Knowledge Objects technical report. The chapters of this document roughly correspond with the chapters in the main document where implementation considerations and other details, that were not included in the main document but still considered important for the approach, are given.
Presentations
Scientific Knowledge Objects v.1
This presentation introduces and exemplifies the main concepts from the Version1 of the Scientific Knowledge Objects.
Tools
Scientific Resource Space
This website describes the Scientific Resource Space (SRS) tool that implements many of the concepts of the SKO specification
Related Projects
LiveMemories
The Active Digital Memories of Collective Life or LiveMemories project aims to capture into 'memories' the data from records currently available on the web in the form of text, images and videos.
These memories are also represented by complex structures, that are very similar to the SKO. As such, the relation with this project is mostly on the conceptual level for the moment but some implementation details (e.g. interfaces and editors) may be discussed in the future.
